About Crystal
My Musical Story
Having taught flute, piccolo, and piano for over 35 years, I have a wealth of knowledge and experience with students of all ages, abilities and interests. I offer a balanced and varied program, customized to each student depending on their interests, goals and abilities. While I am classically trained, not only do I teach classical music, but my students learn a wide variety of genres including pop, jazz, musical theatre and modern.
I began my musical studies at the age of 8, first studying piano and then also flute at the age of 10. Music was and continues to be my passion, and I received a Bachelor of Arts (Music) simultaneously with my Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) from the University of Saskatchewan , my ARCT in Flute Performance and nearly completed my ARCT in Piano Pedagogy when injuries prevented me from finishing. After university, I was awarded the CMA designation.
I am a member of the Alberta Registered Music Teachers' Association and the St. Albert Piano Teachers Association. I am a strong proponent of lifelong learning, and I am always attending workshops, masterclasses, webinars, and doing research on pedagogy, performance, technology, and music literature to further update and improve my skills and knowledge.
As a performer, I am the section leader for the Edmonton Winds, an ensemble of accomplished musicians dedicated to playing the best of wind band music in Edmonton and around the world.
As a teacher, in addition to my busy private studio, I am in demand as a flute clinician. Many of my students have been award winners in music festivals and several have gone on to university and have successful music careers.
I am also the Executive Director for the Alberta Music Education Foundation (AMEF) , a charity dedicated to providing funding and innovative ideas for music education in Alberta. https://amef.ca/ I am also a Member at-Large for the Board of the St. Albert Chamber Music Society. https://www.stalbertchambermusic.ca/
Crystal's teaching style is intelligent, focused and supportive, building on my strengths but also encouraging me and pushing me when I want to hold back a bit, and just feel comfortable. I've gained so much improvement from the gentle push into what I perceive as not possible, but after a few weeks, I always find success. - Valerie, flute student
