Frequently Asked Questions
Do you teach only classical music?
While I am classically trained, I like to teach a variety of styles including jazz, pop, modern and more. I like to see what kind of music students are interested in and supplement it by introducing other genres.
Do you teach only high achieving students?
I teach students of all levels and abilities, from beginner to advanced. All that's required is a genuine interest in learning to play and a love for music.
Do you teach adults?
Absolutely! Some of my best students have been adults. I have taught people of all ages, from 5 to retirement. I enjoy teaching students of a variety of ages and customize lessons to each person.
Do I have to practice between lessons?
Yes. It is critical to your musical development and progress to practice, applying what I've taught you, in order to reinforce what you learned. Practicing creates muscle and mental memory, and the more you practice, the easier everything becomes. As a result, this prepares you for the next lesson so that we can continue from where we left off and continue to improve. As you become more advanced, the time needed for practicing increases. Try to aim to practice 5 times a week; 7 times is fantastic but sometimes difficult to attain.
Is it mandatory to perform in the student recitals?
It is never mandatory but always highly encouraged. Performing in a recital gives you a goal to work towards, gives you a great sense of accomplishment, builds self-confidence and helps you develop important life skills. If you're feeling shy or anxious about playing by yourself, I am always game to play a duet with you! I highly encourage you to perform as much as possible in a variety of settings, such as a private concert for family, for friends, at a school assembly or talent show, in a music festival, in an exam, and more. Most importantly, it's a chance to have fun and share your love of music.
Do you require your students to take examinations?
I do highly recommend studying and preparing for an examination, but it may not necessarily be for everyone. Preparing for an examination gives you a goal for which to practice, gives you a sense of direction and a huge feeling of pride and accomplishment when you receive your certificate of achievement. As well, you can receive high school credits for certain examinations. However, examinations may not be for everyone and that is ok. Some people may just want to enjoy their lessons and take pride in learning and playing music.
